Tips are calculated before or after tax?

Today I had the worse experience dining out.

The server was doing a ok job. So we just left him about 15% tip..which I thought was fair. (I know some people tip 20% or more but we were just students who cant afford to be very generous.) Anyway, while we stepped out of the restaruant, the server stopped us and said we didn’t give enough tips. I told him that I gave him 15% pre-tax amount tip. He insisted it’s 15% of grand total and said that "in America" tips are 15% of total amount includ tax. Ok, we are a bunch of foreign students, not Americans. However, we have being staying here for few years. It is not like we want to be cheap. We just thought, 15% should be added from the total amount of food and beverage but not the amount with tax. Cuz state tax is added by the government and it should have nothing to do with the restaruant. Correct me if I am wrong

What made me feel the worse was that he kept saying "in America" ..We were kind of hurt by that.

Can my employer tax my tips from waiting tables by puting it in my check? Dosent that mean I’m paying taxes 2x

If I work a buffet banquet, I understand that the tip goes on a check, but if I am waiting on tables, taking the order, running the food & cleaning the table, shouldn’t the entire tip come to me & not in a check?

I claim "tax exempt" on my W-4 form. I also get tips, which I claim. Are the tips subject to being taxed?

My employer does not take tax from my wages, but they are taking taxes out of my tips. Is this correct?

How would I report these tips on my federal tax return?

I am supposed to file any tips that I didn’t report to my employer on my federal tax return. I work at a grocery store, and sometimes help customers out with their groceries. Every now and then a nice old lady will give me 50 cents or a dollar. I don’t know exactly how much I would have made from this last year, probably only about $5. How should I handle this on my return?

Thanks.
I’m 100% sure that it is an amount less than $20, but I believe that I still have to report it as it affects my adjusted gross income.

is it legal for my boss to tax my tips at work? CA labor law questions!?

When people tip in cash I get to take it under the table but when people tip on CC or check it shows up on my paycheck and is taxed. Is this legal in California? It doesn’t seem right.

Why are suggested tips in restaurants (15%, 18%, 21%) based on the total including the tax?

My bill is with the restaurant, not the government, so why does the restaurant include the total + the tax when they calculate the suggested tip? Since tax is different in every state (or even different counties) and some states don’t have a sales tax, this means tips are supposed to be higher or lower in every state. This is stupid, so why do restaurants do it?

How does U.S. government tax tips?

In US, do people usually count their tips or not when declearing personal income? Does government have an effective way to track this kind of all-cash income, or people just do this by morale?

What about countries in Europe?

Thnx.
